At Dumpster Rentals Cooperative we are trying our best to wear smallest possible shoes, in any possible way reducing the negative impact on the environment. This is the ninth volume of series of articles devoted to environment protection where we would like to share a few tips on how each of us can invest in saving our planet and protecting the wildworld from pollutions.
At Dumpster Rentals Cooperative we are not so naïve to expect that global warning and other environmental issues can be solved by individual actions but demands mutual effort – one that will stretch over years and decades. We all sould reconsider our evry day activities and habbits and take steps to reduce our impact on the environment. Otherwise, we cannot expect that environmental issues will be successfully addressed.
Drive more slowly and wisely.
It has taken nature 250 million years to produce the oil that we will probably use up in the next century. Every American burns the equivalent of 8.2 tons of oil per year; a European uses 3.3 tons; and the inhabitant of a developing country uses only 0.6 tons. Use of oil for transport continues to rise at 4% per year, but this increase masks certain inequalities. The average American citizen consumes the equivalent of 1,722 gallons of oil annually; each German citizen consumes 1,050 gallons annually, and a citizen of Japan, 756 gallons.
Gas mileage declines quickly when traveling above 60 miles per hour. Each 5-mile increase above 60 is like paying an additional 10 cents a gallon gas.
Don’t use your car for short jeurneys.
Every large city on the planet is suffocating because of car traffic, oil-fired domestic heating appliences, and industry. Half of all car travel in America is for trips under three miles – an easy distance for most people to bike or walk. While citizens of Europe and Japan make 20% to 50% of their trips on foot, Americans make only 5%.
Avoid using your car for short trips. Avehicle produces the most pollution when being started from a cold engine. Moreover, the catalytic converter is fully efficient only when it reaches a certain temperature, which happens after a few miles have been covered.
Don’t idle your car.
One of the gases that contributes most to the greenhouse effect is carbon dioxide. Since 1900, emissions of carbon dioxide have risen dramatically as a result of growing consumption of coal, oil, and gas, and its concentration in the atmosphere is the highest it has been in the last 20 million years. On average, an American produces 20 times as much carbon dioxide as someone from India; however, carbon-dioxide emissions in developing countries will rise considerably in the coming decades.
When you start your car engine, it is pointless to run it while remaining stationary in order to “warm it up.” Instead, just drive gently for a few miles: the engine will warm up while avoiding needless pollution, carbon dioxide emissions, and fuel consumption.
Keep your car’s noise to a minimum.
Three-quarters of the noice in cities comes from motor vehicles. It is so pervasive that we no longer even notice it. A typical pick-up truck passing at 50 miles per hour is 4 times as loud as an air conditioner and 8 times as loud as a refrigerator. Too much noise causes fatigue and stress, and affects our nerous system.
For cities to remain livable, it is essential to keep noise pollution to a minimum. Car exhausts must be fitted with a muffler. Have yours changed when it becomes too noisy.
Replace your old domestic appliances.
Recent years have seen a considerable reduction in the amount of water used by domestic washing machines. The Energy Star label is the certified assurance that consumers are investing wisely. Energy Star dishwashers are at least 13% more energy efficient than standard models, and save water, as well. An Energy Star dishwasher saves approximately 1,200 gallons of water a year, which is equivalent to the amount of water that 6 people can drink in a year.
Your appliances may have served you faithfully for years, but if they use much more water and energy than newer models it is better to replace them – especially if they are used frequently. Energy – and water-efficient models may require greater initial investment, but you will continue to see the benefits over the life of the machine.
